Super Tubers
Tiny potato plants sprout inside the germ-free environment of test tubes, part of the process of growing disease-free seed potatoes for use on Wisconsin farms.

Master Gardeners
Leaf-cutting ants in Cameron Currie’s bacteriology lab are among a very few living organisms that grow their own food. Snipping off bits of plant leaves from surrounding forests, the ants build vast underground gardens, which nourish fungi that in turn feed the ants. Currie and other CALS researchers are studying these nests to understand how ants and microbes work together to make this ancient form of agriculture effective.
It’s a Cow
A developing calf fetus appears in an ultrasound image created as part of a CALS dairy science class on animal reproduction. Students in the class learn a number of technologies to assist dairy cows in breeding successfully, a major challenge that faces any dairy operation.
